Thimphu Is the capital and largest city of Bhutan. It is situated in the western central part of Bhutan and the name of the surrounding valley is Dzongkhag, the Thimphu District. The city became the capital of Bhutan in 1961.
Paro is the name of a district, valley, river and town (population 39,800) in the Kingdom of Bhutan. It is one of the most historic valleys in Bhutan. Both trade goods and invading Tibetans came over the pass at the head of the valley.
Punakha is the administrative centre of Punakha Dzongkhag, one of the 20 districts of Bhutan. Punakha was the capital of Bhutan and the seat of government until 1955, when the capital was moved to Thimphu.
Wangdue Phodrang is the district of central Bhutan. This is also the name of the Dzong (built in 1638) which dominates the district, and the name of the small market town outside the gates of the Dzong.
Trongsa, previously Tongsa, is a town and capital of Trongsa District in central Bhutan. The name means "new village" in Dzongkha. The first temple was built in 1543 by the Drukpa lama Ngagi Wangchuk.
Bumthang is one of the 20 districts comprising Bhutan. It is the most historic dzongkhag if the number of ancient temples and sacred sites is counted.
Chele La Pass at over 13,000 ft Chele La Passto the west above the Paro Valley is the highest road pass in the country and has amazing views of the Himalayas.
Haa Dzongkhag lies along the western border of Bhutan. To the northwest it is bounded by the Tibet.
