Ema Datshi
Ema Datshi is the national dish of Bhutan. Datshi means `Cheese’. This local Bhutanese cheese is majorly famous in Bhutan and it is eaten throughout the country almost in every meal. The green fresh chilies are sliced length wise and cooked with Datshi and plenty of butter is added to the dish. Bhutanese people love chills and cheese and use them in almost every dish.
Kewa Datshi
‘Kewa’ means potato in Bhutan, so Kewa Datshi is potato & Bhutanese cheese, Kewa Datshi is similar to scalloped potatoes. Potato is typically sliced into pieces and sautéed with cheese and lots of butter, and water is added to it; sometimes it is cooked with a few chilies and tomatoes. The dish is pretty mild and it mainly focuses on potatoes and cheese.
Phaksha Paa
Along with beef and yak, pork is also widely loved by the Bhutanese people. For Phaksha paa, slices of pork are stir-fried with whole red dry chilies and sometimes some mountain vegetables as well, and then boil in water. The result is another staple Bhutanese dish that goes great with rice and mixed in with some Datshi dishes.
Shikam Paa
Shikam is like a beacon on the next level and this is the dish that Bhutanese people love with a passion. You’ll see strands of half-transparent pork belly hanging in the sun to dry, that’s Shikam. The pork, which has quite an impressive ratio of fat, is dried in the sun. For shikampaa, the dried pork belly is then fired up with dried chilies.
Momos & Dumplings
Momos are dumplings that are popularly eaten in almost every Asian country is also an integral part of Bhutan. Bhutan serves some of the best dumplings in the entire World and you are advised to try dumplings of Bhutan positively. Many varieties of dumplings are served in Bhutan with different types of fillings like beef, pork, cheese, and even chilies. Bhutan serves its uniqueness in tea as well! Bhutan tea is made from yak milk and fermented butter is made from Yak milk. This special tea helps confront the extreme cold. Bhutanese butter tea is consumed throughout Tibet and parts of Nepal as well. This is the most consumed beverage in all over Bhutan. This tea can be made with regular tea leaves or mountain herbs, churned with butter and salt.
